What to Do When You Lose a Key in San Antonio

Lost keys create an access problem and a security question. Here is how to decide between a replacement key, rekey, or lock change.

Losing a key is frustrating, but the bigger question is whether the missing key can still be used by someone else. The answer determines whether you need a replacement key, a rekey, or new hardware.

Start by identifying the key type

  • Vehicle key or fob: write down the year, make, model, and whether you have a spare.
  • House key: note how many exterior doors use the missing key.
  • Business key: identify whether it belongs to a single door, office suite, or master-key system.

Choose the right service path

If the missing key cannot be recovered, rekey service usually makes more sense than simply cutting another copy. If hardware is damaged, outdated, or no longer fits your security needs, lock change service may be the better route.

For vehicle keys

Automotive key work depends on the vehicle year and ignition system. Some keys can be cut and programmed on site, while others require part confirmation first. Share the VIN, make, model, and key type when calling.

Should I rekey if my house key is lost?
If the key could identify or access your home, rekeying is the practical way to stop that key from working.
Can one new key work every door?
Often yes, if the locks use compatible brands and keyways. The technician confirms that on site.
